Wallago Attu vs Leeri Catfish:
Two Fascinating Predators stocked right here at TopCats Fishing Resort
At TopCats Fishing Resort, we’re home to some of the most incredible freshwater species you’ll ever encounter, and two of the most talked-about are the Wallago Attu and Wallago Leeri. These river giants may look quite similar at first glance, but once you know their habits and traits, you’ll see how truly unique each one is.
The Wallago Attu, also known as the freshwater shark catfish, is a fierce predator native to rivers and lakes across South and Southeast Asia. It’s sleek, silver-gray, and built for power — capable of swallowing prey nearly half its size!
This fish prefers murky waters and hides among submerged logs, waiting to ambush anything that moves, ranging from small fish and frogs to unlucky birds or rodents that venture too close to the water’s edge.
Whilst they are true carnivores, eating fish, crustaceans, and amphibians, our fish are more opportunistic scavengers and are also partial to the odd spicy shrimp boilie
The Attu tends to be smaller growing here up to about 30lbs
The Wallago Leeri, sometimes referred to as the Asian Catfish or Black Wallago, is a close relative but with a few noticeable differences. It has a broader head, shorter snout, and a slightly darker tone. Unlike Attu, which is more solitary, Leeri tends to be found in deeper, slower-moving waters, often in larger rivers and flooded forests across Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos.
Their diet is similar to that of Wallago Attu, it is a voracious predator, consuming fish, shrimps, and sometimes even small mammals.
In the wild, they are much larger, growing up to 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) and weighing 60 kg (132 lbs) . Here at TopCats, the largest one stocked is 100lb on the nose
The Wallago Leeri is known for its steady strength during a fight. Unlike the explosive Wallago Attu, it offers a deep, sustained pull, testing your endurance and skill throughout the battle.
Both fish are similar to a European Wels in that they both can swim and fight backwards
Both species represent a true test of angling skill; they’re strong, intelligent, and unpredictable. At TopCats, our stocked lake offers a rare chance to battle these freshwater predators without traveling deep into the wilds of Asia.
