Sams Birthday to Remember

Malcom Lee is a long-time supporter of TopCats as a team member of the Coco Beach Bar. His son hadn’t been to Koh Samui for some time but with the new test and go, non-quarantine entry system, was here for his birthday last week.

It was a day to remember, with the whole Lake booked for the afternoon. We laid on the cake, but the surprise was completed as everyone had a commemorative T- shirt and Malcom also supplied the trophies for the days event which were for the biggest and smallest fish. There was a special trophy, judged by Larry Harman, for the best Fish that couldn’t be the biggest fish.

Fishing for the 8 people was from 1-6pm, although they all arrived for the TopCats breakfast at 1130am and were on the beers from 12 noon.

The anglers were paired up and we did a draw and used TopCats swims, 2, 3 ,4 and 5. Birthday boy Sam fishing with his partner, Emma drew the Coconut Swim (5).

We took the group photo, with and without the Sam masks and got underway and as seems to be the norm for the number one runs water, in Thailand, the fishing was hectic. 50 fish came out in total with some spectacular fish coming out.

With the water high Redtail Haven is always a good spot and Ben and his dad, Martin made the running, with a Mekong Catfish and a Siamese Carp both of which were estimated at just under 100lb.

The race was also hotting up for the booby prize as Malcolm and his friend Andre both had a ridiculously small Asian Redtail.

Ben then pulled out a monster carp, 100lb+ and looked to be cruising to the winner’s spot, until with 10 minutes to go the birthday boy landed a 200lb Arapaima. Doy did amazingly well to help land the fish doing the impression of a scuba diver to get the hard fighting beast out.

To be honest you could not have scripted the day better and these days are great, the only issue for us is making sure we kept the beers ice cold.
