Ripsaw Catfish: The Armored Oddball You’ll Love to Catch

When you first look at a Ripsaw Catfish, you might think you’re staring at a leftover relic from the dinosaur age — and you wouldn’t be too far off. With its bony plates and spiky armor, this Amazon native is one of the coolest, most unique catfish you’ll ever see (or hook). At TopCats Fishing Resort, anglers come from all over for the chance to catch this armored wonder, and here’s everything you need to know about the Ripsaw Catfish and why it’s one of our lake’s hidden stars.

So, What Exactly Is a Ripsaw Catfish?

The Ripsaw Catfish, or Oxydoras niger if you want to get scientific, is a large species of thorny catfish found mostly in the slow-moving rivers and floodplains of the Amazon and Orinoco basins in South America. Locals sometimes call it the Black Doradid or simply Doradid Catfish. Its nickname “Ripsaw” comes from the long row of sharp, bony spikes that run along its sides. Brush up against them the wrong way and you’ll see why it got its name!

You must listen very closely to our guides when holding one

A True Tank in the River

These guys aren’t small.A mature Ripsaw Catfish can grow over 1 meter (about 3 feet) long and weigh up to 20 kilograms (44 pounds) in the wild. Although we have at least 3 beyond that size here in the lake. While they may look intimidating, they’re actually pretty peaceful bottom-dwellers who’d rather graze than fight.

What’s on the Menu?

The Ripsaw Catfish is an omnivore with a big appetite for just about anything it can find on the riverbed. Its diet includes algae, detritus, small invertebrates, and leftover scraps that sink to the bottom. Think of it as the river’s very own underwater cleanup crew.

We have seen them come out on boilies, deadbait, sweetcorn, and even your common old earthworm.

How Long Do They Live?

In the wild, Ripsaw Catfish can live for about 20 years, sometimes longer in well-managed, protected waters like our resort’s stocked lakes.

Conservation and Challenges

Though not as threatened as some other Amazonian giants, the Ripsaw Catfish does face pressures from habitat loss and overfishing in certain regions. Its unique armor also makes it a target in the ornamental fish trade. That’s why at TopCats, we practice catch-and-release for all our Ripsaws to help ensure they stay healthy and continue to grow to trophy sizes.

Why Anglers Love Them

Aside from their prehistoric look and hefty size, Ripsaw Catfish put up a good, steady fight. They’re not known for blazing runs like some big predators, but they’ll test your gear and your patience and you’ll definitely want a photo once you land one!
