Finley's Arapaima: A Dream Fulfilled
Finley Wells was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia at the age of 7 years old. Luckily, he didn’t need a stem cell transplant, but with 3 ½ years of intense chemotherapy, along with steroids, antibiotics, and many blood transfusions. He was deemed to be in remission in 2106.
In 2017, the leukemia had come back, and he had to start urgent treatment again. As well as chemotherapy, he also needed some radiotherapy this time. The treatment lasted a further 2 1/2 years, but by 2021, he was deemed back in remission once again
After being shielded during the COVID pandemic, in October 2022, the family chose a special trip to Thailand, and 17-year-old Finley Wells fulfilled his lifelong dream to fish for a short session and catch a monster fish right here at TopCats. Top of his list was a mighty Arapaima, but on this occasion it was not to be, although he did catch many other species, including the majestic Siamese Carp.
Last year, the family had some devastating news as in May 2024, they found out that the leukemia had returned. Finley had a stem cell transplant, but in September 2024, he sadly passed away, suffering complications from the treatment
Whilst in treatment, his dad and he had discussed coming back to Top Cats as he wanted to catch that arapaima! His Dad, Stuart, wanted to carry out this wish on his behalf
We were all deeply saddened to learn about Finley’s passing. He was a truly remarkable young man with all that he had been through.
So this week it was our pleasure to welcome back family and friends to our resort to help with Finley’s wish. Of course, TopCats put Stuart on its legendary arapaima swim, and with the help of some great guide work by Doy, Stuart had his arapaima; there was not a dry eye in the house.
Not only did he catch the Arapaima, but also 4 other species, Pacu, Alligator Gar, Amazon, and Asian Redtail Catfish
Cancer is a devastating disease, and we are always keen to support initiatives that fight it. We are proud to support both Anglers Against Cancer (AAC) and Catfishing Against Cancer (CAC).
