Chao Phraya Catfish

Chao Phraya Catfish

The Chao Phraya river is part of the Mekong river basin and flows through Bangkok.

This ferocious Chao Phraya catfish is named after the river but is also known as the Shark Catfish because of its long shark like body and, in particular, its striking upright dorsal fin.

Many customers confuse the Chao Phraya with the larger, more “friendly” Giant Mekong but the 2 fish could not be more different. Although both fight with immense power the Chao Phraya can go like the proverbial steam train.

It is a voracious hunter and predator, not scared to take on anything in the Lake. In the wild, it’s known to feed on carcasses of various animals and birds and are therefore also known as the “dog eating catfish”.
