Battle of the Bars 11: New Match Record
This time a 2 day event and with Koh Samui expecting to be graded as a yellow zone, there are high hopes we can return to a full 1 day event for next month.
This time we fished, Heavens Point, Deep water and the Coconut with 3 teams of 2.
Day 1 saw Samui Web Solutions, led my our marketing guru, Marc Guerin, race to an early lead with 14 fish for 590lb from the Coconut Swim despite a very slow start. In the last hour the Carp really switched on but they also caught 2 small (well for TopCats standards) Mekong Cats that we haven’t seen for over 18 months. They finished well clear of Foliewadi and the French Kiss. This was the 3rd best 4 hour weight, Mark and his new partner, Rob Rolla really felt they had a shot at the 4000 baht first prize.
Day 2 and there were very similar and very hot conditions, but the American Dream, Casey and Foster, fishing for the Boat Bar, Bangrak, caught from the off from Heavens Point. The familiar cry of “fish on” seemed to be sounding out every few minutes. They caught 15 fish in the 4 hours. The tension mounted as we totted up the weight, and my trusty Abacus came up with a new match record of 725lb. They had a very healthy average weight of 48lb per fish, with the usual mix of Siamese Carp, Mekong Catfish with a small Gourami for good measure.
Across the 2 days 66 fish and 10 species were caught averaging just over 43lb. This is only 4 hours, with one rod each and one bait pack between two anglers so it’s awesome and almost unbelievable dream fishing.
The league is tightening up now as the French Kiss and the overall leaders, Coco Beach Bar, failed to fire.
