Alligator Gar
Alligator Gar
A must for any angler’s bucket list the Alligator Gar is a unique, but amazing fish that has been introduced to Thailand from the USA where they are reputed to grow to up to 10ft long. They are living fossils and their near relatives can be traced back in the fossil record to the Cretaceous period or over 100 million years ago!
Although they have gills, they are also air breathers which helps them inhabit stagnant or brackish waters. In their snout they have 2 rows of very sharp teeth which means they need very careful handling.
Although fearsome predators, they will chance their arm on any bait, including corn or our own boilies particularly when presented close to the margins where they often patrol.
They are notoriously difficult to catch with delicate bites, bony mouths which make it hard for hook penetration and of course the risk of bite offs during the fight.
We have 2 types stocked, the black alligator gar and the much more common silver version. Although the lake record is 80lb, these are very wily shy creatures and don’t show for the cameras very often.
