The Alligator Gar:
Ancient Predator of TopCats Fishing Resort
Few fish capture the imagination quite like the Alligator Gar, a prehistoric predator that has swum the Earth’s waters for more than 100 million years. At TopCats Fishing Resort in Koh Samui, Thailand, anglers can experience the thrill of catching this extraordinary species, available in both the Black and Silver varieties.
With its armor-like scales, long snout, and rows of sharp teeth, the Alligator Gar looks straight out of the dinosaur age. Every encounter with one at TopCats is a heart-pounding reminder that nature’s ancient wonders are still alive and thriving today.
The Alligator Gar (Atractosteus spatula) is native to North America, particularly in the southern United States from Texas and Louisiana to the lower Mississippi River basin. These fish typically inhabit slow-moving rivers, swamps, and bayous, where they’ve ruled the waters for centuries.
At TopCats Fishing Resort, they’ve found a new tropical home in the heart of Koh Samui, Thailand, where they continue to grow in size and strength under expert care. This makes TopCats one of the few places in Asia where you can catch both Black and Silver Alligator Gars, massive, healthy specimens that give every angler the ultimate thrill and bucket list fishing experience.
As true apex predators, Alligator Gars are opportunistic hunters with lightning-fast reflexes. Their diet consists mainly of fish, crustaceans, and small mammals, which they ambush with their long jaws and razor-sharp teeth.
At TopCats, anglers often describe the moment of hooking and landing an Alligator Gar as an explosion of pure relief, as they are one of the hardest fish to hook and land due to their finicky bites and hard, toothy mouths.
The Alligator Gar has existed since the Cretaceous period, earning its title as a living fossil. For years, they were misunderstood in their native regions, often labeled as dangerous or destructive. However, modern conservation efforts have revealed that these fish play a crucial ecological role — helping to keep aquatic populations in balance.
One thing to note is that the native red indians in America used to use the scales as arrowheads, so when you pick them up, you will feel the armour that is designed to protect against other predators.
In Thailand, and especially at TopCats Fishing Resort, the Alligator Gar has become a symbol of strength and endurance, a favorite among anglers seeking a once-in-a-lifetime catch.
The Alligator Gar is among the largest and longest-living freshwater fish in the world. They can live up to 50 years and grow more than 2.5 meters long (8 feet), weighing over 150 kilograms (330 lbs).
If you catch one 60-70lbs, it will be a specimen, whilst the smaller Black Alligator Gar stands out with its darker, almost metallic scales and often a good deal smaller.
The Silver Gar gleams beautifully under the tropical sun or the shimmering moonlight. Both are prized catches at TopCats, a true test of patience, technique, and endurance for any angler.
These are snappy when in the net, so our top tip is to let our experienced guides hold the head end.
