Samui Fishing Challenge (September)

Our September team event featured 2 new teams with  Danny and Sue representing Topcats, and Dylan and Mattie fishing as the Breamy Boys.

This 4-hour match for 6 pairs is based on a point system reflecting the rarity and difficulty of catching certain species of fish. There’s a 4000 ThB cash prize for the winning pair, and TopCats also put up a branded towel for the best fish (provided we received a photo that is)

It’s worth noting that the scoring system was devised when Mekongs were not feeding, making them the main target this time, as followers of TopCats’ social media know, they are definitely feeding now. Bait is limited, so an all-in approach for Mekong could lead to running out of bait before the end of the match.

After the draw, teams chose between two boilie rods or one boilie and one deadbait rod. There was a difference of opinion as half the teams chose the two boilie rod option.

The day was overcast and super humid, and the first hour was slow, with only a couple of carp showing and a solitary Mekong for the New Summer House. Their team continued to push the pace, adding a nice Asian Cat and another carp. Danny and Sue Bowkis, fishing for Team TopCats on the next peg, had four carp at that point. The Olive bar had one Mekong and two carp.

In an exhilarating final 30 minutes, it was all to play for. The New Summer House caught another Mekong, but then ran out of bait and could only watch as Team TopCats and The Olive caught two more Mekongs in the last 25 minutes to overtake them in the dying minutes

However, on final countback, it was a draw – the first in our competitions – and the winnings were shared between the Olive and Team TopCats

Special mention goes to 10-year-old Mai Mai, who did most of the fishing for French Kiss (his dad was enjoying the ambiance) and landed a Mekong after an epic battle to win the special prize,  the branded beach towel.

Thanks to all the fishermen and spectators for coming. We hope to see you all again in October!
