Samui Fishing Challenge Round 1
With the low season now in full swing it gave us a chance to run a competition. Rather than get teams to commit for all 6 months, so we decided to run a series of one off invitationals from now to October.
This first one was popular and due to an admin error, no names mentioned, we had to accommodate 7 teams for the first time.
Big shout out to our new teams, Samui Self Defence and from Lamai, the Black Olive Bar and Grill.
After the draw each team could choose their weapons for the 4 hour match, 2 boilie rods or one boilie and 1 fish rod. This format is very relaxed as the rarer the species you catch the more points you earn, so it was painful for the anglers that caught 70llb-80lb carp and got 1 point. Compare that with a Juliens at 30 and a Ray which was 50 Points.
The day was a bit cooler and breezy, but the fish were not really feeding well with 35 fish caught covering 6 species, 7 if you count the empty Mussell shell Izzy caught first cast. Carp were the main catches but as they only gained one point it was the bonus fish that catapulted teams into the top 3.
The winners were Shaun and Callum Smith who opted to fish 2 boilie rods. The father and son combo fished a great match at Heavens Point had several back up Carp, but with a 15 point Ripsaw and a 3 point Asian, they scraped home by 1 point from Team TopCats. Paul was not happy with his draw in Predator Corner, but 2 Tambaqui nearly made it as he caught the Tiger one on his last cast.
Special shout out to the French Kiss with a great show of angling by Tony’s young son, Mai Mai from the unfancied Carp Channel, helped by and Asian and a 10-point Gourami , they came a well-deserved 3rd.
Interestingly the fish rods, with an array of weird and wonderful hook bait, including chicken hearts, squid, prawn did not produce. Drew tried a left field bait, a grape … natural food for Pacu but this didn’t work either.
Food for thought for the next event.
