Battle of the Bars 17
Well, we have come to the end of our epic series that stretched over the last 15 months, and the final event ended in another hugely successful match with the fishing reaching meteoric heights.
Summerhouse were unable to field a team and Graham switched to fish for the Marvels as Brownie was a no show making some lame excuse about a hangover.
The last-minute space was filled by Koh Samui Watersports, as 8-year TopCats customer, Larry was in town. Originally Dan, one of the Coco Bar squad members, was going to fish with him. One thing led to another, so rather than Larry fish on his own I joined him for the afternoon.
As the newbie Larry drew the fancied Redtail Haven.
The French Kiss turned up with a new member, Sebastian and they raced into an early lead on a carpfest from the Deep-Water landing 13 of them in the end.
Larry is an ex matchman from Birmingham and fished the Lake in match style, with a technique I had not seen before. It was working as he was catching carp after carp from on his rod as I relaxed, which was ideal, as I was nursing a twisted foot (Also my excuse for the unshaven look in the presentation photo).
The carp really were ravenous with the extra water in the Lake, the biggest was the estimated 80lb specimen landed by Tony from the French Kiss. That said, there was still 6 other species caught including, a nice Ripsaw and an Alligator Gar for Drew from Marvel Construction fishing on the Heavens Point Swim. Our webmaster, Marc managed to get Mark T along at last, but the 2 Marks had a tough day on the Carp Channel even though Marc landed his favourite Tambaqui.
As the match went on Larry continued his bagging spree, 6 fish in the last hour overhauled the French Kiss team. Koh Samui Watersports ended up with 15 fish and a new Match Record of 765lb. I fished a blinder and contributed 1 estimated 60lb Amazon Redtail.
Overall, an incredible 52 fish came out in the 4 hours for 3040lb, averaging nearly 50lb per fish
Couple of special mentions for Jimmy and Nick who caught an amazing 595lb from the difficult predator swim and for the Coco Beach Bar, who again showed their class framing from the Coconut, even more remarkable their leader, Rob Ferrey fished the whole match with what we now know was appendicitis and we all wish him a speedy recovery.
